3 Must-See Sites in Phuket

Phuket views

It’s been a while since I last blogged so get ready for more. I’ve been a bit busy – enjoying life, making new friends, meeting new people and also working/studying for a teaching English qualification. Now that I’ve submitted all my assignments and passed the exams (YAY) it’s back to blogging. If like me, you don’t have a lot of time to spend in Phuket, here are 3 must-see sites you should check out.

1. Big Buddha

Big Buddha is quite a recent arrival in Phuket, but it’s also one of the island’s most visited landmarks. It stands tall at 45 metres and looks down on Chalong, Rawai and Kata. If you go on a clear day you’ll be able to take in the breathtaking 360-degree views of the island. Just look at the one below.

Phuket is beautiful

As you reach the top of the figure it’s very peaceful. The only noises you’ll be likely to hear will be coming from chimes of small golden bells that are hung up around the base of Big Buddha.

Temple in Phuket

If you can drive and have the choice to, it’s quite nice to take a motorbike to get up to the top. The drive up is peaceful and the views are pretty amazing too. There are a few cafes and restaurants along the way so I stopped off for a bit of a food… and to take in the beautiful scenery.

2. Wat Chalong Temple

Thousands of tourists visit Wat Chalong every year making it one of Phuket’s most visited temples. The temple is beautifully decorated in intricate patterns and gold and vibrant colours. There are several pagodas on the site, making it a real eye catching landscape. I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

3. Bangla Road

If you’ve been to Khao San Road in Bangkok and thought that was crazy, you’ve got to visit Bangla Road. At night, in the heart of the Patong area of Phuket, Bangla Road is transformed into the island’s infamous party hub. The 400 metre long road is closed to traffic and the party starts… if you haven’t already started with the buckets that is.

Both sides of the main road are lined with bars all tempting you in with offers for drinks. How about 7 shots of tequila for 100 bhat? That’s just over £2.30 back home in England!

Bars in Phuket

If you’re hoping for a casual or relaxed drink, Bangla Road might not be for you. But you could wander a bit off the main road and you’ll find more bars and restaurants that are a little bit less crazy.

Things to do in Phuket

There are many other things to see and do in Phuket – but for me these are the ones that stand out the most if you are short of time. Other things to see and do:

  • Many beaches includes: Patong, Karon and Rwai
  • Watch Thai boxing
  • Get a Thai massage
  • Watch a sunset at one of the viewpoints in Phuket – If it wasn’t New Years Eve when I was in Phuket I probably would have done this. Popular viewpoints: Promthep Cape, Karon Viewpoint (Kata Viewpoint), Radar Hill Viewpoint.
  • Flying Hanuman – ziplining activity through the jungle. Amazing views through the top of the trees.
