Why you should visit Utrecht: Netherlands’ hidden gem

After experiencing a few crazy days in Amsterdam it was nice to get off the beaten path and spend a few nights in a quieter, quirkier part of Holland. So off we went to visit Utrecht. Despite being the fourth largest in the Netherlands, Utrecht remains quite the hidden gem.

Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. It’s set around award winning canals famed for their lower-levels, where warehouses were located in the 13th century. This gives the canals a unique split-level meaning dining & drinking down by the water is pretty common.

The city was built around the Domtoren, an iconic 14th-century bell tower. This tower stands in the central Domplein Square and you can see it from pretty much any point in the city. So there’s no way of getting lost around here!

Visiting the Miffy Museum

Before visiting this museum I had very little knowledge of who Miffy was and why so many people were so obsessed with the fictional creation, including my best friend, Munji.

But after Munji explained her obsession with Miffy and we did a little googling, we realised that Utrecht has a museum dedicated to the fictional rabbit and his creator, Dick Bruna. So off we went to the museum.

Although the interior, toys and play materials at the museum are specially designed for families with young children we had a great time. You can expect to see a series of miniature worlds inspired by Bruna’s picture books.

No visit to Utrecht would be complete without seeing the highest and oldest church tower in the Netherlands. The Dom Tower was built in the 1300s and stands at 112 meters high. The tower itself is open to the public and offers excellent views of the city and the surrounding area. But to enjoy that view you’ll have to join a tour group and climb 465 stairs to get to the top. And I must say, it was quite the climb! On a clear day, you can even see Amsterdam from the top of the tower.

So there you have it,if you’re looking to spend a day in a vibrant Dutch city, but want to get away from the hustle and bustle of other nearby places, such as Amsterdam, visit Utrecht. It’s got charm, beauty and bags of personality.
